Im still here

Hey all, I am still here and working out hard every day!  My son is visiting from Colorado so I've been busy with that.

I will post my last few days this weekend.  I also got some great news...

Day 18 of Insanity and my first run since R2R

Day 18 of Insanity

Today was Cardio recovery.  It wasn't that hard, just a bunch of stretches.  It was so easy I decided to go on a run!

First Run since R2R. by rollinolin333 at Garmin Connect - Details

Well I had an easy day with Insanity workout so I decided to go on a short run.  I also thought I would run since my running friends probably wont be running again until the Rock n Roll marathon.
My run went well, the sun was not glaring at me and the cool breeze was in my face for the whole run.  My cardio workouts have helped my stamina and speed quite a bit.  I was able to do a few bursts and didn't get tired.  I need to start trying to run faster paces so I can keep up with everyone.  If anyone has some good pointers on getting better paces, let me know.  I have the Garmin 410 and feel that I may be under utilizing it at this point.

Day 17 of Insanity Workout

Pure Cardio & Cardio Abs

Never eat tacos for dinner before working out. I couldnt do the push ups due to food getting pushed up my throat. I waited a few hours after eating but it didn't work. My head hurt a lot today so my energy wasn't there for the workout. I managed to scrape by though. I worked up a puddle of sweat so I feel much better now.

I started drinking a recovery shake to assist in muscle regeneration or something.  Its a Whey protein and banana shake.   It wasn't that bad actually.  I'm looking to build up some mass as I get rid of the flabby stuff.  I still feel the abs flexing and when I don't have indigestion I can keep up with the workouts. My son is starting to get better at some of the exercises but says his feet hurt when the workouts get tough.  I hope he will get fitter by doing some of it at least.  I'm trying to talk my daughter into running with me.  She is afraid that she wont keep up.  I just say "you have to start somewhere".

Hope every one had a fantastic sunny day and got some sweat on!

Day 16 of Insanity workout

Day 16 of Insanity 60 day challenge

Another day of the Plyometric Cardio Circuit.  I started out strong but towards the end I could not do the exercises hardly at all.  I did as many as I could in the correct form, but felt as though I was quitting.  I really do feel the burn in my abs when we got to the end and did the jabs and upper cuts.  I could feel my abs flexing under my muffin top...  Now if I could only burn this fat faster.  I will push harder and get in more reps.  I will go through the whole program and not quit!

I still haven't had time to run, I know isn't it sad.  The last time I ran was the Rainier To Ruston relay.  Well I have my Garmin and need to break it in on a long relaxing (if I can relax listening to dubstep) run.  I just want to get lost running on a nice trail or road and make it home without collapsing.

To all of you that get to go to the Rock N Roll Seattle marathon, good luck and I hope you have a lot of fun.  I promise I will at least run a half a marathon in total miles by the first of July.  Keep my honest OK.

Day 15 of the Insanity Workout

Day 15, the second Fit Test

The numbers are looking better and better. In a few more weeks ill barely be breaking a sweat on this fit test. I am loving the sweat and intensity of the workout but I miss that rush from running and getting back home feeling great about finishing 5-6 miles. I hope to get back into the shape I was in when I went to scuba diving school.

Now to just find some time during the day and in between meals to run.  Why do I have to work?  That kills most of my day.

Day 13 of Insanity 60 day challenge by rollinolin333 at Garmin Connect - Details

Day 13 of Insanity 60 day challenge by rollinolin333 at Garmin Connect - Details

Well I figured out how to use my Garmin!  I have a really high heart rate though.  I am not sure if I am supposed to keep my heart rate just below my max heart rate or around 80% of max heart rate.  Does anyone know?  Is anyone reading this?

Today's workout was back to back Pure Cardio and Cardio Abs.  It felt really good to pound through more sets than I was able to do last time I worked out.  Its getting easier to have proper form and keep up with the video.  All in all it was a good workout.

I went to Orting on Saturday to ride bikes with the kids.  The 6th leg of Rainier to Ruston goes along a great paved trail along the Carbon river.  The kids and I biked a little over 6 miles and stopped along the way to throw rocks into the river.  It was nice spending time with them, my version of Fathers day, just me and the kids.  My 4 year old boy had his first crash on his bike that still has training wheels.  He likes to watch his front tire when he is speeding along and forgets about everything else around him, his tongue is zipping around his lips when I yelled at him to watch where he was going due to him getting close to the edge of the trail.  He looked up and noticed he needed to make a hard left to stay on the trail and when he turned his handle bars his bike tipped over.  It took me a good minute to calm him down and to show him he didn't have any cuts or scrapes.  He then got back on and started racing me again.  His sister, just off the training wheels, could't wait to get to the bike park so she could ride over the bumps.  It was a good day!

The only bad part of the day was having to tell the team captain of "My van or Yours" that I had to back out of the race.  I had to back out of the Ragnar Relay due to family priorities.  I really hope Tiffany was nice and didn't get upset.  I was looking forward to making some new healthy friends and keeping myself motivated.  I hope she finds another runner before the race.  Thanks for the offer to join your team I appreciated it.  I still feel like crap for having to back out though.

Happy Fathers day to all you fathers out there..

Bad day ;-(

Well my wife reminded me it was our anniversary weekend the weekend of Ragnar so I had to cancel those plans.  She and I both forgot about it.  Then after I committed and told the team yes she remembered our anniversary and freaked out.  I feel like shit for letting the team down.
So my wife felt bad and got me a Garmin FR 410 for fathers day!

Day 12 of Insanity Workout

Day 12 of Insanity Workout

Back to the Cardio Power and Resistance workout.  I wasn't feeling like working out in the hot house.  When I got home the sun had been pounding on my house all day and yes it was HOT.  The workout was great, I was sweating a lot more than usual which was OK, it give me some sense of accomplishment.  The only part that was really hard was the hurdle jumps and floor sprints.  The hurdle jumps are legs wide running in place, like a football exercise, and then all of the sudden jumping to the left followed by more running in place and jumping to the right.  My legs didn't want to move that fast.  Then the floor sprints are hard because when i'm in the push up position its hard for me to get my knees all the way towards my chest due to a little extra mass around my belly.  Yea I said it I have a spare tire.  Its quickly going away along with my fat back.  I loved the moving push ups today, usually I cant do too many of them, but today I knocked them out!  I can tell my upper body strength is getting better just by the muscles starting to appear between my shoulders.

Well I just stepped away from the blog to do some You-tubing and came across

BodyRock.TV

The workouts she does makes Insanity look like a stroll in the park.

I got some more info on the Ragnar today, i'm so excited.  I just hope I can get my work schedule straight for that week.  It doesn't help that 3 other guys that work with me in my division are going too.  I will get it done though!

Tomorrow morning I plan on waking up and putting in 3-7 miles in depending on which side of the bed I wake up on.  Wish me luck!

Keep on Keepin on!

Day 11 of Insanity Workout

Day 11 of Insanity Workout

Good news, but first let me tell you about my workout.
Today I was looking forward to getting home to see my little boy graduate preschool!  He is so darn cute, just like his dad :-)
After the graduation I got to do the Cardio Recovery again.  It was the 35 minute lets hold the squat position and feel the burn workout.  Yes, it hurt really good.  I am getting better at holding the positions longer and not taking breaks on a regular basis.  This workout also helps with getting better at stretching, which is exactly what I need.  I cant believe it had me sweating so bad with so little cardio and a lot of slow painful positions.  When I was done with the workout I wanted to run so bad, but I talked myself out of it somehow.  I have got the greatest news that will get me motivated to run more though!
Holy cow!  I am going to run the Ragnar Relay in July?  I haven't worked out the details yet but I am sooooooo freaking excited!  I only have a thousand things going through my mind right now

I'm so lucky to have met the most awesome people through running!

Day 9 & 10 of Insanity workout

Day 9 & 10 of Insanity Workout

Yesterday was day 9 of my new weight loss program.  It was another round of Pure Cardio, a 38 minute intense cardio workout.  The hardest thing for me was the switch kicks.  You are supposed to jump back and forth from one leg to another while kicking one in the air.  I couldn't do the jump part so settled with just kicking my legs up in the air.  I am getting to where I can go further every time I do the exercise again.  I almost think I should be running too.  Its just hard to get home and try to workout for 45 minutes to an hour and then run.  I still have to have dinner and it sucks trying to do cardio after dinner.  There just doesn't seem to be much time to do both.  I am trying hard to keep up and push through the workout to maximize my effort.  My son is having issues with the muscles in his feet, they are sore from all the new movements he is doing .  He is pushing through the pain though, and maybe holding back a bit at the same time.

Day 10, today, was the Plyometric Cardio Circuit again.  40 minutes of a really long warm up and then some insane core building, puddle making workout.  This workout has some Burpie type exercises along with some push ups.  The push ups are feeling strong and i'm getting more done than before.  There are some different types of jumping jacks and squats.  The jumping jacks are making my shoulders hurt, burn actually. Yesterday we did an exercise that has you in a push up position with your but high in the air (inverted v position) while doing push ups.  So your push ups are working out your shoulders.  Man I could really feel it today.

Like I said, I really think I have enough energy to do more exercise than the 45 minutes that Insanity is providing.  Does anyone else feel the same way?  If so what do you do?

Also my shoes slide on my wood laminate floor, does anyone have a good cross fit type of shoe that is recommended?

Thanks

Day 8 of Insanity Workout

Day 8 of the Insanity Workout.

Time to get back to the Insane Cardio Power and Resistance workout.  This is the same workout as day 3 of my blog shown here.

Day 3 of Insanity Workout

I just got through my 3rd day of the Insanity workout.  I am tired and a little sore from the stress it is putting on my shins and ankles.  The third day is Cardio Power and resistance.  I used an old pair of NIKES for this workout which felt a lot better on my feet than my running shoes.  My feet stayed on top of the soles instead of rolling off of them.  My 15yo son was making all kinds of noises…. I thought he was having a baby for a second!  He actually corrected me on one of the exercises by telling me I had to go all the way down to the floor.  It’s nice to be able to get him motivated and care about his health.  He wants the 300 abs like I do by August!
Working out in the living room is pretty hard though, it doesn’t have a tall ceiling and it’s hard to move around on some of the exercises.  I find myself stopping my movements for no apparent reason other than the small space.  If you like to sweat this is the workout for you, your heart races and your breathing is fast.  The video we watch to do the cardio has breaks where you’re supposed to stretch out before and after the workout.  I, for one, cannot stretch very well.  The video goes so fast, it seems that when you finally get situated to where you can feel a good stretch they are moving on to the other side.  It would be great to have a personal stretching coach!  Do they even have those?
All day at work I was still ecstatic about the relay last weekend.  It gave me such a great surge of energy.  I can’t wait to do something like that again.  I looked on line for some upcoming events but haven’t found any yet.  If anyone knows of a good source to feed my new habit let me know.  I actually saw someone driving today that had the R2R medal hanging from their rear view mirror and I was Like “I WAS THERE MAN!!”  Now I want more ;-)
This time I got home early because I wanted a good workout before eating dinner.  Working out after dinner makes it feel like its coming back up my throat when doing the push-ups.  I made it home early enough to go downstairs and, with the help of my son, cleaned up the dog hair and mopped the floor.  Downstairs is cooler on these hot days but its also the dogs nest during the day.  Buster, the dog on the right likes to shed year round so after cleaning up it doesn't take much time for him to leave some more hair.

We got the Futon and my Yorkie s kennel outside to make more room for the jumping around.  The only thing in the way now is the ceiling fan.  I will tackle that one on a later date.  Now after configuring the Xbox to play the video we started the exercise!  I felt pretty good on the long warm up but was feeling the burn during the hurtle jumps.  Then after the warm up was the stretches!  It felt so good to stretch the muscles and  that's usually when my body starts to sweat.  Yes it was dripping off of me fast.  After the warm up and stretch was the workout.  If I had a heart rate monitor it would help me out to keep my heart rate as high as I could for the cycle.  It would at least give me a goal to keep and to keep my mind from thinking I was tired.  I think I could put more into the workout but I end up taking a few brakes here and there to catch my breath.  Maybe if I had the heart rate monitor I would just use it to take more breaks when my rate was too high?  If its even close to being high, I just don't know.  A lot of my day also consisted of some intense research on line for the best GPS, Heart rate watch I could get at an affordable price.  I want the heart rate monitor for the Insanity workout and to better count the calories burned when I run.  And I definitely want the GPS to track my speed, pace and distance when I run!  Its a toss up right now between the Garmin 210 and the Timex Ironman GPS run trainer.  The Timex is about 20 bucks cheaper than the Garmin but Its a Timex.  Its all about the money though.  I have a scuba diving watch that i'm going to take to the Pawn shop to see if it will help me pay for a fitness based watch that will give me an excuse to workout.  Don't tell my wife but I've also been looking at running outfits.  I hate shopping for clothes too.

Well all and all the workout felt great, my stretching is getting better and it takes me longer to get tired.  One week of this has already been noticeable to me and to others.  I drive a good 60 miles one way to work and back so its noticeable when the belly fat doesn't pinch on your waistband.  My core is also getting tighter, when i'm sitting up my ab muscles feel really tight.  My uniform (Navy Chief  khakis) fits better, and I feel great.

Keep on Keepin on!

Sunday....Day off

Well I did plan on running on Sunday but other things came up that prevented me from working out.  I feel like crap thismorning.
Hopefully I can get a good workout in tonight.

Day 6 of the Insanity Workout

Day 6 of Insanity Workout

Well I thought I was done with day 6 but I did the wrong workout.  So tomorrow morning I will wake up early and do the correct workout.  I thought the last workout of the week before the day off should have been harder than a 16 minute abs workout.  It was supposed to be the same workout as day 2, the Plyometric Cardio Circuit.  So if you want to know what I’m doing tomorrow just look at day 2 in my blog.  I will also run tomorrow just so I can really exhaust myself!  Well it felt great last Saturday!

A new blogger friend of mine told me about this training program for half marathons I’m going to be looking at.  I really want to do more races!  I have a lonely R2R medal on my wall that wants some friends.  It kind of brings me back to High school track when I’d love to get the medals.  I ran the 400yd sprint and the High and intermediate hurdles.  I was so good at track that the coach let me smoke cigarettes….yuk I know.  I quit smoking after my 8 year old daughter was born.

Hope everyone else is having a fit day ;-)

Keep on Keepin on!

Day 5 of Insanity Workout

Day 5 of Insanity Workout

Pure Cardio was the name of the game today.  I couldn’t keep up with the warm up but I did all the exercises the best I could.  My son was giving up saying his feet were killing him.  I remember when I started running again little muscles here and there would hurt in my feet so maybe he is hurting.  Or it could be the fact he is wearing my shoes.  I guess we need to go to the store tomorrow to see which cross training shoes to get him.  I found an old pair of stiff Nikes that are doing well for me.

Well the workout warm-up was hard, and then the workout even harder.  There is a combination of moves that is really hard to do when you’re out of energy and trying to catch your breath.  One of the exercises has you jumping side to side like you’re jumping over a log (kinda like leg 2 of Rainier to Ruston) and kicking one leg up after landing on one foot.  I know, it sounds confusing huh?  I do feel myself getting stronger and adding more to my repetitions every workout.  I definitely sweat so I know its burning the calories.  I told myself I wouldn’t weigh myself for at least a month because I don’t want to get discouraged.

One more day of this insane workout and then I get to try to go on a 10 mile run, well at least 6 anyway!

Keep on Keepin on!

Day 4 of the Insanity Workout

Day 4 of Insanity Workout

Today was Cardio Recovery, a lot of stretching and some squats.  The squats were ok until I had to hold the squat position.  Boy did it burn.   I am itching to do some running just to keep trying to get faster.  I know this cardio will help me with pushing through the tough times on the run though.  I might actually start getting up early to run and then do the Insanity workout at night.  I know im crazy.  Seeing those Ultra runners on R2R makes you feel humble though, they really can go the extra mile.  Tomorrow is Friday!!!!!!!  Work for me is ok but all day I think about getting home to get my workout in.  What’s wrong with me?  Sunday is my day off of the Insanity workout so I plan on starting some Marathon training that someone just told me about.

It’s too late for me to join in on the Ragnar Relay but I got to find something soon before I lose this rush.  I can’t afford the hundred something for the Seattle RNR so what else is there?

Can’t wait to get back on the trails.

Day 2 of the Insanity workout 60 day challenge

I took pictures of my before yesterday so it  looks like I'm committed to doing this!  I may post them later when I can see the difference the workout is making.  Or just post them after my 60 days are up.  What do you think? Now or later?  Leave a comment and let me know.

I’m still really tight from the Rainier to Ruston Relay.  I did better on the fit test last week when I tried it for the first time.  My muscles are sore but I feel great.  I can tell the Insanity workout really hits those hard to reach muscle groups.  I am doing it with my 15yo son who has wanted to do something for a while.  I’ve got to keep on pushing and keeping him involved!  The movements are pretty hard at the moment; I have to get stronger and better at my breathing so I can do more of the exercises in the time allotted.  I can’t believe how much I was sweating after the workout, I felt great!

It is not running though, its way harder.  I almost can’t wait for my day off the insanity workout so I can go run.  I ran just about 7 miles on my first leg of the R2R so I will have to try to double that.
The shoes I’m wearing are not good for cross fit type of workouts though, I need cross trainers I think.  If anyone has any recommendations I would appreciate it.

Rainier to Ruston Relay 2012

My first Relay!

The beginning of the day was great.  We had an awesome view of the river and a little of the mountains.  My stomach was full of butterflies due to my first leg being the longest and hardest.  My team " F My Third Leg" is 4 Sonar Chiefs stationed at Bangor Washington Sub base.  I got talked into this by a Ragnar relay veteran.
Any way back to my first leg.  Leg 2 of the relay  started out on a rocky muddy path that I'm still surprised I didn't break anything.  The trail zig zaged up and down ravines, the mud puddles were 2 feet deep in some areas and the trail was anything but down hill.  I took this leg because I'm an out doorsy type of person and was hoping to see some nice scenery.  Boy was I mistaken, my mind was focused three to four feet in front of me for most of the run.  I found out that many of the puddles were not as deep as the mud .  Once I got to the flat trail was my first encounter of the team "Honey Buckettes".  This girl wearing a flashy red skirt passed me like I was standing still.  That motivated me to pick up the pace a little bit.

Here is my first leg

After the first leg I was soooo thirsty.  And I think that's a smile!  After that run I'm pretty sure I can do anything.

It was time for me to put on my second pair of shoes.

After washing up my legs and putting on some clean and dry socks, we headed down the mountain to the next leg.  I tried to walk and move as much as I could to keep from locking up.  I felt really good and the butterflies were gone.  My second leg was my shortest leg so I was feeling really good.

Here comes Chris to hand off to me for my second leg.

This was my second leg

The run was nice, wind in the face and great view of the river.  The trail was paved and felt good on the feet compared to the muddy trail I just finished.  Once Again I got passed by the "Honey Buckettes" again.  The likely hood of us beating them looked grim at this point.  She has about a minute faster pace than I did and was impossible to keep up.  Let me remind you that this is my first relay and I have not been running for long.

Leg 10 of the relay was my last leg "F My Third Leg"!

The trail was sandy muddy wet and the stickers and weeds kept trying to trip me.  This leg definitely has you jumping from side to side to get the trail with the least chance of tripping you.  My team had passed the Honey Buckettes once again and it was up to me to keep the lead...
Yea you guessed it she had passed me up towards the end.  Man she was fast.

Well my legs were complete and surprisingly I still felt great.  I had such a blast running I think I might try this once again.  Thanks to my team mates for finishing.  We would have finished sooner but our third guy got lost in the Port of Tacoma for 30 minutes.  We were driving around frantically trying to find him.  Luckily for us he made it to the exchange and borrowed a phone to let us know he was OK!

I highly recommend this run to anyone that is interested.  I don't run much and I was able to finish without any issues.  It was harder thinking about it than doing it.  Next year I'm taking Leg 2 again!
